Manchester City secured their fourth consecutive English Premier League title, and their sixth in seven years, with a commanding 3-1 victory over West Ham on Sunday.
Heading into the final day of the EPL season, City were two points ahead of Arsenal and knew that a win would secure them yet another trophy. Their triumph was marked by a celebratory pitch invasion as they clinched the title with relative ease.
Phil Foden’s early goal set the tone for the match, rendering Arsenal’s simultaneous 2-1 win against Everton irrelevant. Arsenal, despite their spirited fight, finished two agonizing points behind City.
Fifteen minutes into the game, Jeremy Doku’s precise cross navigated through three West Ham defenders to find Foden, who calmly slotted the ball into the net.
West Ham’s Mohammed Kudus, who has had an outstanding debut season in the Premier League, briefly rekindled hope with a spectacular bicycle kick just before halftime, reducing City’s lead to one.
“I believe in scoring a bit too early,” Foden commented about his early strike. He added, “The second goal settled us a little bit.”
Despite Kudus’ remarkable effort, Manchester City sealed the match—and the season—with Rodri’s goal in the 59th minute.
This victory gives Manchester City a total of eight EPL titles, the second-most in history, trailing only Manchester United’s 13. It also marks Pep Guardiola’s 12th league championship in 15 seasons as a manager. His six English top-flight titles rank second all-time, behind only Sir Alex Ferguson’s 13. Guardiola has crafted one of the greatest teams in Premier League history. No club in the 124-year history of English football had ever won four consecutive top-flight titles, nor had any won six titles in seven seasons.
Additionally, City stands on the verge of another historic feat: they could achieve back-to-back domestic doubles if they defeat Manchester United in the FA Cup final on Saturday. Under Guardiola’s leadership, City has revolutionized English football, dominating possession, controlling games, and dismantling opponents with precision.
Guardiola, reflecting on his tenure, hinted at his future by admitting he is closer to leaving Manchester City than staying, despite overseeing an unprecedented fourth Premier League title, which he believes surpasses the achievements of the great Liverpool and Manchester United teams.
